Headwalls can be used in a number of scenarios. Typically headwalls are used on the outlet of a retention basin to maintain top water level. Headwalls can also be used at a discharge point. The apron of the headwall prevents downstream erosion, whillst the upstand retains the earth behind the structure.
They are designed to prevent the growth of plants around the pipe that may damage or block the flow. Headwalls are often made from precast concrete to ensure durability and long life. Headwalls often also include wing walls to direct water flow to the pipe and away from any soil.
Benefits of Headwall Drainage
- Headwalls are a low cost solution to prevent the erosion of soil and drainage pipes.
- They are built using strong, durable materials so that they last a long time.
- They prevent drainage water from damaging the road structure while also providing structural support.
- Headwalls direct the flow of water, reducing damaging turbulence and ensuring the efficiency of the pipe.
- They act as a marker that indicates a pipe opening, protecting pipes from accidental damage during maintenance.
- They help protect pipes from being crushed by the force of the road overhead.

Installation of the small and large GRC headwalls
Dig out sufficiently to allow the headwall flanges to finish flush with the batter. Take the outfall pipe (minimum length 1.5m of rigid impervious pipe) and slide it though the headwall so that it protrudes approximately 50mm. Make a good connection with the land drain and seal by returning approximately 150mm of soil into the trench and consolidating. Unravel the string and draw the anchor back along the trench as the rest of the backfilling is completed.
Installation of the GRC 300 Series Headwall
It is recommended that the unit should be bedded on 100mm of dry mix concrete. The drainage pipe to be entered through approximately 50mm and the gap around the pipe to be filled with cement mortar. If increased strength is required, we recommend the use of concrete as backfill material.
